I will be going over our emergency plan and procedures then giving you your laminates and your vests which will mark you as fire perimeter team. We will then all WALK over to the piece and start the perimeter. There WILL NOT be a space for you to lock up your bike inside the perimeter so either leave your bike at camp or be prepared to have it outside of the crowd of people.

You all need to be or have the following:
Non-confrontational – Have a head lamp!! – Bandanna in case of a dust storm – Goggles – Water!, Wearing fire retardant natural fiber clothing (will be asked to leave if not dressed properly). This means jeans, cotton, natural fibers or leather.
You WILL NOT be on the team if you are wearing the following: – Feathers, plether, faux fur, spandex any sort of poly stretchy cloth
We will start a small tight ring around the piece and slowly walk towards the rope being assertive, but polite. You are the host, they are the guests. Anyone not wearing a laminate will not be allowed into the perimeter. We will hold this circle while they fuel and then light the piece. Only after height has fallen to the point where it can no longer hurt anyone and myself and the FAST team have agreed it is no longer a danger, and  I have given you the signal are you to drop the perimeter.
I will be roaming the whole perimeter and will be coming by to check on all of you throughout the whole process. Once the perimeter has dropped we will meet back at an appointed space so I can get a headcount and you are free to go.
I have included a link here please read it all and specifically “Step Four on playa” as this is the most important for you all.
If you have a friend who wants to participate please send them my way, we still have a couple of openings.

Zhenya Shabs

*(Wednesday 6pm  in front of  Kostume Kult and Thursday morning @ The Temple)

Her Life Celebration

Zhenya was a unique individual much loved by all who knew her and her passing was and is an opportunity to honor her life, style, and gracious humanity while reflecting on how lucky we are to be part of a community with people like her.

An alter will be set up somewhere on the east side of the Temple.  We encourage people to bring photos to add to the memorial.  You can also write messages and read stories about her.

On Thursday morning, we will attach a locket of her hair to the end of a White Balloon Chain line and fly it over the temple during the sunrise.  The line will be made on Wednesday, 6PM in front of Kostume Kult frontage (3:15 & Esplanade).  People will have the opportunity to write messages to her on the white balloons.  You’ll also have a second chance just prior to sunrise at the temple.  Both times, we will toast her life with a shot of Vodka.   Let her fly high and give her the best view of the Playa.

Andrew Sewell

*(Thursday 2pm 830 & Esplanade)

By now most of you have heard…
Dr. Andrew Sewell, aka Dr. Mercury – the outspoken Connecticut Regional -is no longer with us.

He was an instrumental part of the Connecticut Burner scene. He was a highly intelligent, clever, irreverent human being with a wicked sense of humor and the ability to share insightfully and intelligently with just about anyone. He is missed greatly already.

In honor of, and to celebrate the life of, this most interesting of fellows, I propose that anyone who is interested please join me in traveling out to the Temple to honor his passing Thursday from 2-4:00PM. Meeting at AutoSub-8:30 & Esplanade, around 2:00PM and heading to the Temple around 2:30PM. Many of us have lost someone in the past year and although we all mourn and celebrate in our own ways, I feel that as a community it would be nice to visit and remember one who was so part of and instrumental to, and in, our community

BRC Official Info and Deadlines

1. Ticket Fulfillment concludes (July 15)

All of your Ticket “Gotta know” is on this page.

2. Disabled persons vehicle app  (July 31st)

Let’s face it: Black Rock City is huge, and it grows larger each year. How does one navigate such an expanse? It’s daunting. Human (foot and bike) power is the standard mode of transportation in Black Rock City, but as Burning Man continues to grow, and BRC expands to accommodate its population, more people are tempted to fall back on their attachment to driving to get around.

With a city of tens of thousands of people, and the problems inherent in human-vehicle interaction (over the years we have seen severe injuries and even death due to vehicle-related accidents), it is critical that Burning Man remain primarily a city for pedestrians and bicyclists. The only vehicles that may be driven at Burning Man are staff and service vehicles, vehicles for people with a physical disability, and Mutant Vehicles.

The Department of Mutant Vehicles (DMV) was created in 1997 to address the very real challenges of non-human powered driving at Burning Man. It was the alternative to banning the movement of vehicles at the event altogether. Black Rock City can only accommodate a small number of vehicles being driven. If you wish to bring your Mutant Vehicle to Black Rock City or require accommodation due to a disability, you must go through the DMV licensing process.

3. Press app due  (July 31st)

This Burning Man Press Resource Center is designed to help journalists prepare for the event. All media outlets must register with Burning Man prior to arrival in Black Rock City. The Media Team is here to help you get your story, but the most important thing to remember is that you are a citizen of Black Rock City and are expected to comport yourself accordingly.

Burning Man is a private event, and photographers, videographers and documentarians wishing to capture images intended for public distribution are required to sign use agreements that will be emailed upon approval of a project. Our review and written permission is required to use any image from the event publicly regardless of its commercial intent; no public use of images is allowed without this written consent.

If you are shooting film or video only to show your friends and family, you do not need to register as press. Information about personal use video cameras can be found here. Personal use still cameras – cameras which use film and only capture still imagery – are permitted and do not require a written agreement, but any image use beyond personal use must be approved in writing post-event.

4. STEP Closes- Secure Ticket Exchange Program (July 31st)

To sign up to participate in STEP go to your Burner Profile anytime after 12pm (noon) PST February 28th 2013. Burners who have an extra ticket to sell can submit it for sale through the STEP system, and those wanting to purchase a ticket can sign up to join the STEP queue to buy.

This is a place to experience deep relaxation, a space for inspiration, and childlike playfulness.

About the park: Havemeyer Park is an urban park space located across from the old Domino Sugar factory. Over one acre in size, it is a multidimensional space that plays host to large scale interactive art, an urban farm, a bike trick trail, a reading room, and way more!

Suggested donation begins at $25 at the door, $20 until June 28.

See you in The Forest!

The NYC Container goes on sale Wednesday, July 10 at noon EDT.

After you’ve dusted off from PEX but before you are too crazy to have spent all your money on sparkles and shit.
Our website will have the details.

Here’s the deal:

A. You are required to read the WHOLE WEBSITE. It has important information on it about packing, buying, etc.
B. Space is sold in cubic feet…not square feet.
C. No refunds, so don’t horde. And no refunds, so measure well!
D. You will be signing legal forms, so if you share your space with someone else, make sure you trust them!
E. No BIG BOXES that you can not lift yourself. Seriously, if you have to have a team of people lifting it, you can’t load it. (exceptions for art and themecamps only). But we WILL turn you away and no refunds. You read it here.
F. IF YOU ARE BIG ART…we are not an art moving company. I promise. So if you are loading on for someone else or you are having someone else load your art, let’s chat. Seriously, this won’t go well otherwise.
G. No BUYING FOR A RICH BOSS who just doesn’t feel like dealing him/herself. Unless we have already had this conversation, don’t even think about it. This NEVER goes well.

We are scary and mean and all that stuff, so follow the rules and things will go well! Otherwise, we have ogres and goblins that find you on the playa and steal all your good stuff…..growl.

We are truly looking forward to another wonderful year of container bliss. We will do a call-out for day-of volunteers close to load-in!

All our burning love,

INFORMATION:  This summer, NYC based balloon artist, Robert Bose, will be bringing his large scale, trippy art installation, Balloon Chain, back to Burning Man.

In years past, he has funded his art project out of pocket, taking out pension loans to pay for the helium, balloons, line, tools, LEDs, batteries, and all of the other supplies needed to make Balloon Chain happen.
This year, his pension loans have been maxed out and he needs your support to bring Balloon Chain back to the playa.  He has set up a Kickstarter campaign to help him pay for his materials and his new, kick-ass, interactive, super bright balloon lighting system.

14. NYC CORE – Kickstarter

10 Bucks…

May not get you a cocktail at the Plaza or an 8 o’clock movie ticket in Union Square or a carriage ride through Central Park or even entrance to a super swank party at an undisclosed location, BUT…

it Will connect you to your community and to the project of joint effort and love which goes by the name of 2013 NYC CORE: Star of the City.

YOUR art piece, OUR art piece represents for the New York Community five wings, five arcs, five points, five boroughs of strength that is not only New York City, but also the New York City Burning Man’s Community symbol of Tenacity and Perseverance.

On or Off playa you can be part of  this project and experience.

When completed, the Star of the City will be a towering 20-foot tall structure.  It will be part of Burning Man’s Circle of
Regional Effigies where regions from around the world present structures that are representative of their local communities.

So not only are we building an awe inspiring and poignant art piece, but we’ll be doing so with close to 100 members of the New York community -which should include you. So, in order to bring the Star of the City to life, our team needs to raise a lot of money for its construction and cross-continent installation.

We’ve already received lots of financial support/faith in the project but we still need you! The Kickstarter campaign is up to fund the remainder of what we need to make this project happen. Please consider joining the team, with a little financial faith ($$) and sharing with your friends.

To make a donation visit our Kickstarter page:

Thank you so much for your support and I hope to see each of you in the near future.

24. ReVITALize – A “Leave No Trace” Art & Education Recycling Program

We are “Revitalize.” Our goal is to bring the collective conciseness of Burning Man to the outside world. If you’re not familiar with Burning Man, it’s a week-long annual event held in the Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada. The event is best described by many participants as an experiment in community, art, radical self-expression, and radical self-reliance. Burning Man promotes ten principles to try and make the world a better place. Our Mission is to take one of the principles, “Leave no trace” and use it to educate kids across the country on the importance of recycling plastic by recycling their TOOTHBRUSH.

The Toothbrush is an everyday item that many of us forget is often made from plastic. We are asking schools to participate in collecting old used toothbrushes to help us build a communal art project.

It’s estimated that over ONE BILLION toothbrushes make their way to landfills annually and takes several hundred years to decompose into our soil. The American Dental Association (ADA) is now on record recommending you replace your toothbrush every three months. We are now in a full-blown plastic epidemic threatening our environment. Lets use our collective power in putting plastic in its proper place through recycling.

“In partnership with TerraCycle, we have created a year round sustainable program for every school that participates in our art recycling project. It’s a great program where your school earns .02 cents for every toothbrush sent to TerraCycle through ReVITALize. In addition, ReVITALize will be giving away a $5,000 grant to one school through a collection contest.

We need your help in spreading our campaign to your school.

Below highlights how to sign your school up for the ReVITALize/TerraCycle recycling program,

1           Click or cut and paste the following link:

2.             Fill in the personal information box. For the username, type the “ReVITALize” custom prefix code “NFPR” first before your school name. So for example it should read like this NFPRgeorgewashingtonhighschool. It’s very important to make sure you use our prefix code. It allows us to account with Terracycle on the toothbrushes you collected and it insures they’re directed towards our art project.

When it’s time to ship the bins back with the used toothbrushes, please follow the below instructions to download your pre-paid shipping label.

Log into your ReVITALize/TerraCycle account. Click or cut and paste link – Then click “send your waste” link, then click “get shipping label” to download and print your pre-paid shipping label.

VERY IMPORTANT: ONCE YOU HAVE REGISTERD YOUR SCHOOL, PLEASE EMAIL US BACK TO CONFIRM YOUR REGISTRATION. As soon as you email us back we’ll mail out a ReVITALize bin to you. Please remember to include the name and address we should mail the bin to.

Please email us at with any questions.

Thank you for your Interest and we look forward to working with you.

25.  Shamandome (NYC, NY)

Shaman2Shamandome is…

a service camp dedicated to giving spiritual healings to the people of the playa. Shamandome is building the ShamanCycle, a green, renewable energy vehicle. Our dream is to take drumming, ceremony, healing and ritual onto the Playa. We need finishing funds for this amazing monster,  visionary community bicycle that will show how people can generate their own electricity and their own healing.

Please be a co-creator and co-visionary of the ShamanCYcle and give at whatever level feels comfortable to you!

We are 70% funded with 22 days to go. We have awesome rewards including an invitation to the ritual unveiling of the ShamanCycle, invitation to a dinner with the Shamans and Shamanistas of ShamanDome, a holistic singing lesson, original artworks by Phoebe Legere, a graphic novel by Phoebe Legere, a chance to be in a movie that will also feature the late Hunter S. Thompson as he has NEVER been seen before, and beautiful t-shirts and hats with our logo.

Phoebe tells how the Eagle gifted her with the idea:

“When I arrived on the Playa. I put some of Mummy’s ashes in the Temple. I fell asleep and I had a dream. An Eagle came and sang to me in her Eagle voice and told me to create a new kind of car. It started like those beer bikes you see around Europe, but I kept designing, and drawing, and thinking and dreaming, and soon it had morphed into a “save the planet” mobile.

Curious Jeff Carver and Phoebe Legere began designing a vehicle that would run on all renewable energy.  They are getting help from Burners and Makers all over the world!   Ah ho! That’s the Magic of Burning Man!

This dream has turned into monster 10 person bike that will use solar panels, Golden Spiral Horizontal Wind Turbines and Pedal power.  We hope to achieve 35mph (only 5 mph on the Playa of course!)  and have energy to spare to charge YOU! There will be a giant Eagle on top with flaming eyeballs.

This is your chance to be a Co-Artist of a Monster, 10-person vehicle that symbolizes Shamandome’s commitment to healing the planet and ourselves, and  our children.

For information about the Horizontal wind turbines (the use the Fibonacci series in 3D!)  follow my blog at:

The  page that has gained almost 10,000 likes in two weeks….

And a press release created somewhat before I had a another dream about horizontal wind turbines…and thought “Somebody must have come up with this idea before…” that’s when I googled ….and began collaborating with Omar Abass and now things are REALLY getting interesting!

26.  Burn2 (Virtual Playa)

The Burn2 Regional had a wonderful Virtual event this past weekend called “Color Out Of the Lines”. The event ran from noon Friday, May 24, through midnight Saturday, May 25.  It was a collaborative building event, where you could construct things using pre-built elements, or create and insert your own. The Burn2 Lamplighters were there too, for processions and drumming. You can read more about it at

27.  Temple for Christchurch (New Zealand)

Greetings Fellow Burners,

We in Kiwiburnland need your help with a very significant project that will help a severely shaken community. Many of you will remember the year 2011 as the year of worldwide natural disasters. While the devastating Tohoku earthquake/tsunami and scary Virginia earthquakes caused a great deal of discussion amongst the Burningman Regionals Network, the most devastating earthquake in New Zealand history went largely unnoticed. The beautiful city of Christchurch enjoyed very quiet times for almost a century before the devastating February 22 Richter magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck. This rare event produced some of the strongest shaking ever measured on planet Earth, and instantly reduced the CBD of the city to rubble. 181 people lost their lives, and many thousands were displaced from their homes due to earthquake shaking and liquefaction damage. The earthquake cost New Zealand over 10% of the country’s annual GDP. Believe me this is huge on the scale

of things, and the city will not fully recover for 20 years or more.  What’s more, the earthquake was one of at least four earthquakes over Richter magnitude 6 to occur in the area over the period Sept 2010-Dec 2011, and was actually an aftershock of a magnitude 7.1 earthquake located well to the west of the city. The earthquakes are still on-going to this day, and some suburbs have experienced more than six liquefaction episodes! As a seismologist who studies earthquakes and makes hazard maps and numbers for the engineering community in my default world job, I was revolted by the raw edge of my science. So fascinating to study, but so horrible to realise. I was actually at Burningman at the time of the 7.1 quake, and I felt horrible inside because of what might lie ahead, and for being so far away from my Kiwi people.

Not surprisingly, Christchurch people still need major healing after the earthquake. Homelessness, depression, alcoholism, marriage breakdowns, and suicides have been rife in the city. The city now needs every bit of support in order to heal and move on. To this end, the Kiwiburn community has got into action. Under the esteemed leadership of Hippie Tim, a greatly respected veteran of Kiwiburn, the Temple for Christchurch (TFC) project has been conceived, planned, and implemented.  As is the case for temples at Burningman, the TFC project has been conceived as a way for the people of Christchurch to let go and move on from their experiences of the Christchurch earthquakes.

What makes the TFC special? The temple is designed to replicate the seismogram (earthquake squiggly lines) of the February 22 earthquake in 3D. Its dimensions are 40m long by 25m wide by 6.3 m tall (6.3 was the initial Richter magnitude assigned to the Feb 22 earthquake), and it is beautiful. You can check out the design images in the website (image also attached). TFC will be constructed in the CBD of the city on a site formerly occupied by an old Convention Centre (now demolished). It is being built by local volunteers from wood recycled from demolished houses. After Christchurch people have had a chance to visit the temple and leave their thoughts, offerings etc over a set time period, it will be relocated to the country to be burned (city bylaws prevent the burning  happening in the CBD). Judging by the community responses so far, the TFC will bring huge healing to the city. As people visit the Temple

they will be encouraged to share their earthquake stories and experiences with others by adding to the walls of the Temple. People will be invited to bring photos, poems, mementos, letters from insurance companies etc. They will be able to write poems, and draw pictures. As more and more people add their stories to the walls, a communal dialogue will be created, allowing insight into how others have been affected by the shared history of the earthquakes.

So where do you come in? In short, we need our international Regional Burningman network to be aware of, and feed positive energies to, the TFC.  It would mean a great deal to us to have your endorsement, support and love. However, another big big issue is that we need to raise a significant sum of money to support the project. The TFC project is currently well short of the absolute minimum budget for the TFC to happen, and we are very close to the scheduled completion date (the site can only be occupied for a specific timespan). The Black Rock Arts foundation has kindly provided funds, as well as the Canterbury community, but these generous donations are still well short of the mark. We desperately need to find these extra funds now. 16. PIPPIN ON THE PLAYA     pippin

Pippin, the musical, is the story of a young man trying to find his way in the world, guided by a troupe of players who encourage him to ultimately set himself on fire to leave his mark in their “grande finale”. Now, imagine this journey taking place in Black Rock City, a first time burner trying to figure out where he fits in, how he can make a difference in the world, surrounded and guided by wacky players of all stripes. He tries to find his Corner of the Sky, while a
veteran Burners tell him to pay attention to the Simple Joys and to enjoy the moment before there’s No Time At All. There are spectacular sparkle ponies who just want to Spread A Little Sunshine, and War Is a Science in the Thunderdome. And of course, there is nothing quite like
the Morning Glow of the Temple at sunrise. After a long night on the playa, who hasn’t experienced feeling a bit frenzied and frazzled? We just need a helping hand to put us on The Right Track. Pippin, like all of us, strives to be Extraordinary.

So I totally have this vision of setting Pippin on the playa and filming it. And I need players! I am looking for people who understand the need to find a balance between hard work and focus to bring a crazy art project to life, and the reality of playa time and how plans are sometimes futile. I am good at herding cats, but I need cats who are willing to be herded. I work as a professional theatre director, but I have also directed the DC Burner Choir a number of times as well, so this is a balance with which I have experience. 😛

I will be auditioning people over the next month, either in person or video. You don’t have to be in or near DC (where I am), though bonus if you are! Most roles are currently open. All experience levels welcome, but as you will be rehearsing your music largely on your own,
you need to assess your comfort level with that. I hope to meet somewhere on the east coast over the summer, possibly at a burn prior to the end of August. (for those of you who are familiar with the current Bway revival, I SWEAR I came up with this idea before I knew about the concept of the players as circus performers!)

Lots and lots of details still to be worked out…I just have this crazy notion and want to see if others would like to join the ride! Shoot me a message if you are interested and we’ll go from ther3

GET Involved!!!!

(New York City)

FIGMENT + ENYA (Emerging New York Architects of the AIA) + SEAoNY (Structural Engineers Association of New York) are building their 3rd pavilion on Governors Island to be featured at the participatory arts extravaganza FIGMENT NYC 2013! The City of Dreams Pavilion will be a gathering place for people to meet, learn about the arts programs on the island, be able to enjoy a performance or lecture, and experience the interaction of art in the historical context of Governors Island. Check out the video here!

The City of Dreams Pavilion presents the opportunity to allow emerging architects, designers, industry professionals, students, public space enthusiasts, and a world of other people the chance to become part of building one of the next exciting public spaces and public pavilions of NYC!

The theme for this year’s pavilion is Head in the Clouds, a venue where visitors can lose themselves in both the cloud-like structure, as well as the clouds in the sky around them. This amazing structure requires the hands of hundreds to help build it. Construction has begun, and the designers are inviting everyone to help build it throughout the months of April, May, and June. Join us as we work together to build one of the next exciting public spaces of NYC and Governors Island! Volunteer builder shifts and details here. See you soon!

Hey NYC Burners!

Do you like fire?
Do you like drumming?
Are you looking for a way to participate in this year’s burn?
The Empire Fire Collective needs your help. We are a new conclave of fire performers from all over New York and New Jersey who have come together to create art, have fun, develop fire skills, teach, and burn stuff. We welcome performers of all skill levels: newbies, seasoned performers, and fire-curious. We believe that anyone who can safely spin fire and make the necessary commitment should be able to be part of the awesome experience of spinning under the man.

We are still looking for a few safeties, drummers, and possibly performers for this year’s burn. We rehearse every Wednesday from 8-10pm at McCarren Park in Williamsburg.

If interested in participating, Please come to one of the next two practices: Wednesday, May 1st (That’s TONIGHT), or Wednesday, May 8th.

20. Help Build a 10 seat Bike with Shamandome smallheaderphoebedrawing  shamancycleanimals

Shamandome is building a 10 person bicycle for Burning Man 2013!
We are launching our Kickstarter this afternoon to get finishing funds for our awesome green community transportation!

Help us build a giant multi-user Eagle Bicycle with Beautiful Metal Wings and Flaming Eyeballs! It is Green Art Transportation! All lights, music and devices onboard will be run by pedal and solar power.

The Shamancycle is completely made from re-cycled and re-purposed metal, welded, brazed and forged into a poetic symbol of what our community represents: the healing of the planet, and of ourselves, and of our children.

The Shamancycle was designed and imagineered by East Village artist Phoebe “Songbundle” Legere of Shamandome Camp. Phoebe is a transmedia artist. She creates works that combine music, dance, visual art, sculpture and renewable energy technology. The Shamancycle is being built by Phoebe, volunteers from Shamandome and members of Curious Forge, a maker’s collective in Grass Valley, California.

Please watch for our Kickstarter launch tomorrow. And thank you so much (ah ho!) for “liking” our Facebook page Go to to learn more about the way designers and engineers, artists and activists are coming together to make a vehicle of energy transformation.

21. Peter Hudson-ZOETROPES-2014 PH
(San Francisco, CA)

Lucky for us, Peter Hudson will be creating another of his incredible zoetropes for Burning Man 2014. In case you weren’t aware, a zoetrope cylindrical device that produces the illusion of motion from a rapid succession of static pictures; instead of drawings and shutters, Peter uses sculptures and strobe lights to achieve the same effect. In the past, he’s used his formidable skills to bring swimmers, divers, monkeys, and rowing skeletons to life on the playa, and around the world. We’re not going to tell you the details of his project, as he prefers to unveil his creations in Black Rock City, but you can darn well be sure it’s going to be amazing.

Please support his project if you’re so inclined:

22. Indiana Burners on PBS IN
(Indianapolis, IN)

Heya folks! Earlier this month the Indiana Burners held a Potluck, Costume Swap, and Fire event at a local bar that’s been super wonderful to our community. During that time we were being filmed for a short vignette for the local PBS station’s Art of the Matter (you might know it from NPR, now it’s on PBS, YAY pictures!). Here’s what was turned in:

We feel super special getting to do this and share a little of our burner community with the larger Indiana community.

23. SPARK: A Burning Man Story (SXSW Review)  spark
“Only three minutes into the film, and I knew I would have to go to Burning Man sometime in my life. After watching the film, I realized that may not be as easy as imagined.
The documentary Spark is about how the elusive festival in the desert, Burning Man, came to be and is today. In this moment, what do you really know about Burning Man? Before watching the doc, I knew very little. I knew it took place out in the desert, it was something like five days of hippies dancing in the sun, taking as many drugs as possible and commemorating the entire experience by burning a huge statue of a wooden man on the last night. Come to find out, my predictions were not too far off. Although the festival is a week-long and there is much more involved than hippies getting high in the desert. It’s much deeper than that…”
